It seems things are becoming increasingly desperate as more and more borrowers grapple with unaffordable mortgage payments.

The latest involves a Long Island truck driver behind on his mortgage who executed an elaborate fake robbery in order to pocket the money and make good on his commitments, CBS 2 reported.

The suspect, Cesar Ramirez, told police he was robbed at gunpoint during a large-money transfer, but after hours of police questioning, broke down and admitted what had really happened.

Police later went to his home and recovered thousands of dollars, which were apparently set aside to bring the mortgage current.

CBS 2 interviewed the suspect’s children, who revealed they overheard their father speaking of his mortgage problems with their mother.

The man’s co-workers and employer were ”outraged” by what had taken place, and noted that overtime was always available to boost income.

Ramirez is currently being held on $45,000 bond, with a court hearing scheduled for this week.

In past months, homeowners have attempted a number of unconventional tactics to avoid paying the mortgage, including arson, as highlighted by a recent memo from the Insurance Information Network of California.
